Surfaces of rail fitting systems explained

Elegant surfaces for your project

Surface, design, finish: these terms are often used interchangeably. However, most people are not aware of the actual differences, the ultimate material used to manufacture the ordered product and in which way the coatings may differ. We clarify the way we use the terms and explain the differences related to the surfaces mentioned below, and why the colour of the images displayed in the web shop are not always 100% matching the delivered product.

We clarify the way we use the terms and explain the differences related to the surfaces mentioned below, and why the colour of the images displayed in the web shop are not always 100% matching the delivered product.

Important: In this article we refer to our tubes, rods and summaries to our profiles. Other product categories, such as hinges and connectors, are often but not exclusively made of cast zinc for which the coatings and materials may vary.

Regardless of whether it involves the design, finish, style or surface, these terms describe the surface, i.e. the outer layer of the product. Let's look at a round tube with the property "Surface: Brass” as an example. This is a stainless steel tube, coated with a brass-coloured PVD coating.

The same applies to the black surface (previously anthracite-black): the tube is coated with black-coloured PVD.

The material of the product does not correspond to the surface. A tube can have a chromed or brass surface, but the material of the tube itself is stainless steel. More specifically, stainless steel AISI 304 (V2A).

In short, the following substrates are included in the G-Fittings range:

Brass and brass matt

The designs brass and brass matt are PVD coatings. Brass describes the glossy variant, also referred to as glossy brass. The sandblasted version is matt brass.

Anodised silver

The anodised silver surface is created by means of the anodising treatment method. The anodising process is mainly used for aluminium profiles. It is easy to care for, color-fast and has a hardened surface thanks to anodizing. It offers protection against mechanical influences and is weather and corrosion resistant.

Black (previously anthracite-black)

The black design is a special deep black coating that is applied to the steel which is achieved with the PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) process. It is a premium quality coating.

Brushed stainless steel

The typical stainless steel surface is provided with a structure during the brushing process leading to a rough and matt surface. Brushing creates small grooves on the surface, so you should always wipe in the direction of the grain when cleaning to really remove dirt particles.

Chrome

The chrome finish is highly polished stainless steel. In order to achieve the desired high gloss, the tubes are polished in several passes. The surface is like a mirror.

All surface designs serve a decorative effect. The properties of the product do not change because of the coating applied, but the design can be adjusted to your individual interior desires.

Because coatings may vary in terms of strength and the polishing process or PVD coating may slightly differ, all products in the web shop are displayed with preview images. Unfortunately, the substrate does not provide for a 100% match guarantee with the delivered product. That is the reason why our products are described as a design, because we are talking about a continuous design on the surface with potentially small variations.

G-Fittings relies on multi-stage quality control: This begins with the incoming goods inspection and the auditing of our own suppliers. The workpieces are also subjected to regular interim checks during ongoing production. A final check and professional packaging ensure that only flawless products leave our warehouse.
